Intro to Quilting (Thursdays 6-8pm)
WINTER SESSION: JANUARY 6 - FEBRUARY 23
Class Description:
Learn the basics of quilting in 6 weeks! Open to all levels of experience, this class will cover how to create a quilt from start to finish. We will begin with the essential skills for drafting, cutting, and piecing mosaic quilt blocks, and explore additional surface embellishment techniques including applique. In following sessions, we will move through assembling a quilt top, quilting the layers of the blanket, and binding the edges to complete the quilt. Participants can expect to play with both machine and hand-stitched techniques, upcycled fabrics; to assemble and optionally exchange samples of various design motifs; and to create their own throw-size blanket to take home.
Teacher Info:
Cecilia McKinnon is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from California and New Mexico, currently living and working in Philadelphia. McKinnon’s work explores entropy, time, precarious landscapes, and ‘natural’ histories. Her work draws on found and salvaged materials, and takes form as dyed and quilted textiles, biodegradable cast objects, moving images, and creative writing. She holds a Master of Fine Art in Fibers + Material Practices from Concordia University in Montréal, and a BFA from the University of New Mexico.
