WINTER SESSION: JANUARY 6 - FEBRUARY 23

Class Description:

Learn the basics of quilting in 6 weeks! Open to all levels of experience, this class will cover how to create a quilt from start to finish. We will begin with a potholder project as an introduction to the stages of piecing a quilt block, quilting together layers, and binding the edges to finish. In following sessions, we will build on essential skills for drafting, cutting, and piecing mosaic blocks, and explore additional techniques including applique, building towards a table-runner project. Participants can expect to build skills with machine and hand-stitched techniques; to create samples of various block designs; to create their own functional quilted textiles; and to gain new love for the history and present of this vibrant craft.

Teacher Info:

Cecilia McKinnon is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from California and New Mexico, currently living and working in Philadelphia. McKinnon’s work explores entropy, time, precarious landscapes, and ‘natural’ histories. Her work draws on found and salvaged materials, and takes form as dyed and quilted textiles, biodegradable cast objects, moving images, and creative writing. She holds a Master of Fine Art in Fibers + Material Practices from Concordia University in Montréal, and a BFA from the University of New Mexico.
