Animation Art (12-2pm)

$250.00

SUMMER 1 : MAY 5 - JUNE 22

Class Description:

Because animation isn’t just cartoons. With opportunities for technique, color, movement, texture, humor (sometimes), sound, and music, animation could be the most absolute form of self-expression. The class will begin with a brief history of animation including an interactive zoetrope demo. Several examples of experimental animation from the past and present will be shown and discussed, which will ultimately shape an approach to the forthcoming exercises and final project. We will explore movement and timing using frame by frame techniques, and gain an understanding of how to move things slow, fast, and how to get things to stay still (yeah, it’s harder than it sounds). We will look at and try out several techniques of experimental animation such as pixelation, painting or drawing frame by frame, and cut paper or textures. The class will briefly touch on backgrounds such as hand drawn, textured, real world, abstract, and green screens, as well as lighting, titles, and sound. Students will apply their understanding and use whatever moves them (so to speak) to execute a short animation using an object or technique to express an action, emotion or emotional arc.

Teacher Info:

Rusty is an artist and independent animator with a focus on object animation in real world settings. His short films have screened worldwide and have won several awards in the US for animation and original music. Without dialogue he uses movement, humor, sound and music to blur the line between character and experimental animation. He has had two solo exhibitions with painting and has participated in countless group shows with artwork and animation. His goal with animation is to immerse the viewer in an alternate world where inanimate objects experience the complexities of the human condition, including competition, failure, bullying, duplicity, companionship, idiosyncrasy, and self-realization.
