Tabletop Role Play: Sci-Fi Fantasy (Thursdays 4-6pm)

$250.00

FALL SESSION: OCTOBER 14-DECEMBER 8

(No classes the week of Thanksgiving)

Class Description:

Tabletop role play is one of the best ways for a child to explore the bounds of their imagination in ways they don’t in their day-to-day lives. What would it be like to be someone else, and make decisions as them? In my experience playing and running these games, both children and adults can discover things about themselves by engaging in role play. The core of the tabletop role play experience is in playing your character. The students in this class will select from a set of pre-made characters what role they would like to play. The various characters belong to archetypes that detail what they are able to do, but the character’s motivations, backstory, and personality are all up to the students to decide. The first session will be dedicated to making these elements of the character and learning the game’s mechanics and rules. By the end of the first session, the students will have an understanding of who their characters are, what they do, and how they do it. These characters don't exist in a vacuum, they have an objective, and a setting which provides multiple ways to achieve it. the basic loop of tabletop role play involves the Game Master or GM (that's me!) describing scenes that the students' characters find themselves in and asking what the Player Characters (or PCs) do. We roll some dice and I describe what happens based on the result. Together, we shape a story that centers on and responds to the actions of the students. The final thing to cover in this description is the content of the story. We will be playing in a Sci-Fi fantasy setting akin to the likes of star wars, dune, or Guardians of the Galaxy. I personally enjoy this setting because of the wide variety of content within it. If one student wants to play as an ancient wizard, another as a dashing robotic cowboy, another as a mad scientist inventor, and another as an amorphous blob of goo, these characters are all possible within sci-fi fantasy. I won't spoil the adventure here, but students should expect to make tough decisions, watch their characters change, and find creative solutions to problems besides just blasting the bad guys. I hope to see you in the stars this fall session!

NOTE: STUDENTS AGES 10 AND UP ARE WELCOME, BUT ACCOMPANYING ADULTS ARE ASKED TO WAIT IN THE GALLERY DURING CLASS

Teacher Info:

I am a traditional artist that specializes in comics as well as an amateur actor that has worked with children in several LARP-style summer camps. I have been running tabletop roleplaying games such as D&D for both friends and strangers for 6 years. I wrote my own tabletop game based around sci-fi fantasy media such as star wars, which is the subject of the class I hope to teach!
