Still Life: Step by Step

  • $250

  • Often overlooked for its quiet unassuming nature, still life painting is a versatile and very accessible way to become familiar with many fundamental concepts and approaches applicable to making all kinds of art. The genre of still life can be used to explore materials, learn composition, develop allegory and most importantly works to turn looking at often mundane or obvious subjects into an engaging and exciting process. This class will introduce some basic principles of drawing and painting from observation with a backdrop of conversation about the logic and philosophy that comes with trying to represent what we are seeing. This class is open to all skill levels, techniques will be emphasized but ultimately most of what we do will be unique to the curiosities each of us brings and there is no “right” or “wrong” approach and that is what we will celebrate more than anything.

    THURSDAYS 6-8PM

  • Henry Murphy, born, 1995 New York, NY, is an oil painter, living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Henry earned both a BFA and a painting certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he was awarded a Von Hess Memorial Travel Scholarship. Painting from direct observation,as well as principles pulled from the classical landscape painting tradition, folk art and an idealized notion of pre-photographic thinking. The act of observational Painting, done as a combination of painting and drawing on site, serves as a jumping off point for contemplations of nature, and the consideration of places and their histories. This effort to paint from life is crucial to the content and choices in Henry's work and a way of interacting with the local world. When Henry’s paintings diverge from the observational mode they are, again, a means of interacting through seeing.

2D: Mixed Media

  • $250

  • Students will leave with a sense of confidence and resourcefulness in their ability to make art with nontraditional materials, and have a new outlook on the process of making a piece of art. Mixed media making is a joyful practice that can open many doors. Like any art form it can be a slow meditative process, or an enlivened dashing of energy. In this class, students will experience both. We will work with collage, painting, drawing, finding, searching, looking. Not only will we work within the conventional avenues of visual tradition, but we will also scavenge and decompose imagery from the gutters and underbrush with the goal of building up our own ecosystems of material from which to recycle and proliferate new ideas.

    THURSDAYS 6-8PM

  • Jacob is an artist and teacher in Philadelphia. His work has been shown in galleries locally and internationally. Trained at Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA, his work is grounded in painting. He draws on observation of natural growth, ecological relationships, and memories; transmuting the literal into symbols, abstractions, and fables.

Teacher Info:

Jacob is an artist and teacher in Philadelphia. His work has been shown in galleries locally and internationally. Trained at Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA, his work is grounded in painting. He draws on observation of natural growth, ecological relationships, and memories; transmuting the literal into symbols, abstractions, and fables.

Beginner Ballet

  • $250

  • Beginner Ballet is for the pliè-curious adult who’s always wanted to jump and twirl with a tad more technique. In this class, we will begin with the very basics of ballet positions, learning each term and shape not only for how it looks, but also how it mechanically feels and functions in the body. We will move through a traditional ballet class format, with time at barre and in the center, warming ourselves up to complete the class with combinations that focus on presentation and flourish. At the end of the series, students will have a thorough understanding of ballet positions as well as an embodied sense of how to point a toe, find their turnout, balance on one leg, jump with lightness, and use their port de bras (upper body and arms) to bring expression to their dancing. This class aims to offer ballet without the classical rigidity often associated with the technique, queering the form such that students breathe joy into their swirling dances.

    MONDAYS 6-8PM

  • Lu Donovan is a dancer, facilitator, and writer based in Philadelphia. His work prioritizes pleasure and researches strategies of queer-ing, or, widening options for how a thing can exist, be used, be seen and be held. His movement classes vary in style, but all serve as a container through which students can try new embodiments while discovering a relationship with their dancing body. In class, he asks questions about normatively understood “truths” in our anatomy- where does sensuality lie on a cellular level? Lu has taught all over Philadelphia, including at Mascher Space Cooperative, Cardell Dance Studio, The Woodlands, and The Arts League.

This technique can be seen in candy making, laminating pastry dough, some beadwork in polymer clay, knifemaking techniques and many other spaces. In this class each guest can use provided bisque molds or free build to make a set of dishes or bowls for your home. We will be using Brown, white and Blue Clay during our time together. This class is open to all levels of clay, and is super approachable for beginners.
